LIHEAP - Low Income Home Energy Assistance
What it is
A federal program started in 1981 that provides funds for energy costs to those whose annual income is less than or equal to 150% of the poverty level. Criteria and funding does vary by state and state governments may choose to supplement the federal funds.

Why You Should Care
Because funding is set yearly, LIHEAP is always in need of support from citizens. There is the risk that it will be underfunded, meaning that qualified people who sought help will not receive the funds they need.
